The ELI believes that students learn English faster when they are actively using the language. A special activities coordinator organizes events such as picnics, parties, skiing, skating, sightseeing tours, movies, and trips to other cities. A special community outreach coordinator organizes volunteer activities, small conversation groups, and conversation partners. ELI students are part of the University of Pittsburgh community and have access to free and discounted cultural activities throughout the city and can use recreational/sports facilities, computer labs and libraries on campus.

The University of Pittsburgh's Global Ties office has also created the "Global Compass", a guide for international students which contains information about life at Pitt and in Pittsburgh, food, shopping, and more.
